Teledyne Designated National Hypersonic Science Center

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - March 30, 2009 - Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY) announced today that its subsidiary, Teledyne Scientific & Imaging, LLC, was named by NASA and the United States Air Force as the National Hypersonic Science Center for Hypersonic Materials and Structures.

In addition to Teledyne Scientific & Imaging, the University of Virginia was designated the National Center for Hypersonic Combined Cycle Propulsion, and Texas A&M University was designated the National Center for Hypersonic Laminar-Turbulent Transition. The new centers will advance research in air-breathing propulsion, materials and structures, and boundary layer control for aircraft that can travel at Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound, and faster.

"For over three decades, Teledyne Scientific & Imaging has been a leader in the development of novel materials such as ultra-high performance ceramic composites, polymer composites, and multi-functional materials," said Robert Mehrabian, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Teledyne Technologies. "Teledyne is honored by our selection as a National Hypersonic Science Center from an extremely competitive group of respondents. This effort supports Teledyne’s strategy of leadership in areas of fundamental science and technology critical to the U.S. Government."

NASA and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) previously teamed to review each other’s technology portfolios and develop a plan for foundational hypersonic research. The National Hypersonic Science Centers represent the first effort to sponsor research jointly. NASA’s Fundamental Aeronautics Program and AFOSR each set aside as much as $15 million to fund the centers. Each center will receive $2 million per year and as much as $10 million if all renewal options are exercised.

The Teledyne Scientific & Imaging team also includes researchers from University of California at Santa Barbara, University of Colorado in Boulder, University of Miami in Florida, Missouri University of Science and Technology at Rolla, University of California at Berkeley, and University of Texas at Arlington.
